2001 Outlook Trophy Results

The South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club conducted the 65th Annual Outlook Trophy Race on Saturday, August 18, 2001 in light air and under sunny skies.  This race for boats under 20 feet in length with either centerboards or multi-hulls is the longest continuously conducted race on Santa Monica Bay.  It challenges smaller boats to a long race on the unsheltered waters of the Bay outside the Marina del Rey breakwater.  It uses the Portsmouth handicapping system with the adjustments applied at the start of the race in an inverted start.  This year, the San Fernando Valley Yacht Club also conducted a race for keelboats using the Portsmouth handicapping system on the same 12.8-mile course.

First place in the Outlook Trophy was taken by the Capri 14.2, Déjà Vu, sailed by Susan Taylor.  Déjà Vu was the first to start, and, after three hours, 38 minutes and 46 seconds of racing, was still 52 seconds ahead the O’Day Daysailer Hot Water, Sailed by Ralph Middleton, that started one minute after Déjà Vu.  A member of the Race Committee commented that “if the boats had been tied together at the start, they wouldn’t have broken the string.”  Third place went to another Daysailer, Seaweed, sailed by Bill Kimberly.

In the SFVYC Keel Boat race, First Place went to the MacGregor 26, Tessa, sailed by Ernie Patton.  Second was the Ranger 23, Meassis Dragon, sailed by Raymond Van Heel, and third was a Moore 24, One Moore Time, sailed by Don and Andrew Hedges.  Fourth place went to a J24, Homer, sailed by Lynda Bouch, and fifth went to a Columbia 28, Sun Burst, sailed by Jerry Moore.

The day started slowly, with winds so light the boats had to work hard to get to the starting line.  After a 30-minute delay for better winds, the races were conducted in steady zephyrs of 4-7 knots, varying less than 40 degrees from the west and southwest.

Hospitality and results were enjoyed at the SCCYC Clubhouse on Mindanao Way, next to “G” Basin in the Marina.
